Let Me Read Your First Draft(Part 2)
How do ideas of a story evolve as you write your first draft?
When you plant a seed, you wouldn’t be able to know how many branches, its height, or its texture after it grows into a tree. All you can do is to grow it through the days and you know the answer when the day comes. Ideas are similar. The initial idea will always differ from the final idea, although they share some similarities.
This concept applies to my process of writing my first draft. After having an initial idea, it changed, as I continued to write the story.
Evolution of Ideas
As said in part I, I planned this story to be a Lovecraftian horror story. However, when I wrote the opening part, I had an unconscious intuition of building up the science fiction elements, and when I finished one third of the draft, I found out that this story was more like a science fiction stories rather than a horror story. For this reason, I did some adjustments. However, I kept the evolved ideas in the story, but they created a good atmosphere for the horror elements to be explored.
This was only the first draft. As many drafts were completed, the story would be unidentifiable from its first prototype. This is the strength of creating stories without knowing how it’s gonna end. The lack of plan plants out more potential for the story.
Tell me about your first draft and how it is different from your initial ideas.
